Noel Korten American

Noel Korten’s artwork grows out of his interest in thinking about Nature as an idea that is formulated by the human mind and includes everything in the world that we did not create ourselves, but also includes us. His paintings are illusionistic representations derived from his photographs of desert rock formations. His sculptural ‘log pieces’ are found objects (logs) that have been altered so that viewers can look inside them. Both present the viewer with ambiguities and play on the idea that human perceptions are subject to our inclination to interpret what we see as being like something we already know, and to think of this process of "recognition" as both self-limited and self-illuminating, something like an internal mirror.
