Line of Sight: Dawn Arrowsmith

22 September - 29 October 2022
Overview

Tufenkian Fine Arts is pleased to present, Line of Sight, an online solo presentation featuring a selection of paintings and mixed media collages by Los Angeles-based artist Dawn Arrowsmith. The selection of works in this exhibition come from the artist’s Place of Difference and Map Collage Project series.

The paintings in Place of Difference utilize the nature of opposites by juxtaposing vivid, complementary colors. These works highlight line, shape, color, and spatial relationships as central concerns within the artist’s practice. Arrowsmith uses chromatic vibration as the major source of content for these abstract geometric compositions. In these works, the quadrilateral “place” floating in complementary color with emerging, hesitating, missing, connecting, and shifting lines is intended to generate a visual conversation; a sense of place with new paths of thought.

Arrowsmith’s Map Collage Project began in 2004 as the artist was looking for a new place to live. Shuffling through old paper maps from Thomas Guides implored the artist to question the humorous, outrageous, and expressive arrangements  Los Angeles freeways could make throughout Southern California. Line has always been a fundamental element throughout the artist’s works, and the freeway lines of the Thomas Guides offered the perfect vehicle with which to explore notions of place, landscape, and abstraction.
